  1. Skin Melanomas 
  2. Several systems are used to stage skin melanomas. The depth of invasion is the best predictor of outcome. One classification categorizes primary melanomas into five levels of invasion that a pathologist can easily recognize under the microscope (Clark's levels).
  3. ‚Ä¢ Level 1 is melanoma at the place of
  4.   origin, in the basal layer of the epidermis
  5.   at the epidermal-dermal junction, where
  6.   the outer and underlying layers of the
  7.   skin meet.
  8. ‚Ä¢ Level 2 is extension to the upper third
  9.   of the dermis, the papillary dermis.
  10. ‚Ä¢ Level 3 melanoma extends to the border
  11.   of the papillary and reticular dermis.
  12. ‚Ä¢ Level 4 involves the reticular dermis. 
  13. ‚Ä¢ Level 5 invades subcutaneous tissue ,
  14.   such as fat.
